Attention Trail Challenge participants: the 3rd Annual Trail Challenge Has Been Postponed

Due to winter’s persistence and spring’s modesty, much of the trail is still covered in snow. We hope that spring weather will catch up soon, but as the snow melts we will inevitably get many muddy days to follow. We are fortunate to have one of the country’s best hiking trails run through our backyard, but with that comes a responsibility to use ethical practices in order to keep the trail healthy.

The Superior Hiking Trail includes beautiful views of rivers, ponds, and active beaver habitat. That is the optimistic way of saying that for every scenic peak, there is a mud hole waiting at the bottom of the hill. The Superior Hiking Trail Association is addressing these problematic areas with their Trail Renewal Program, prioritizing popular stretches and the muddiest areas. This is not a project that will be completed overnight, so we must be patient and preserve the trail as it is.

The Trail Challenge will still be taking place, but we will be pushing back the start date to June 1st and the finishing date to June 30th. This year’s challenge will feature 42 miles of hiking along the north shore, with stops in the following areas:

  • Duluth
  • Two Harbors
  • Silver Bay
  • Finland
  • Tofte
  • Lutsen

Stay tuned as we provide more updates as the trail dries up. We hope that this delay will allow the trail to be easier to hike and provide more enjoyment for all!
