Throwback from our 2018 Trail Challenge! Park at the Superior Hiking Trail Highway 1 Trailhead. Cross the road to hike North on the SHT. After a mile you’ll reach the Spur Trail to Fantasia overlook. It is not required for this hike, but if you have the time and energy, it’s worth the extra mile roundtrip detour! Continuing past that spur, you’ll eventually climb up onto a rocky ridgeline overlooking Wolf Lake. Wolf Ridge ELC can be seen off in the distance on the other side of the lake. Take your #TFTC26 Selfie from the ridge with Wolf Lake in the background. Retrace your steps & Leave No Trace!
BONUS: One of the TFTC26 Prize Categories is the Best Photo from the picture spot at Wolf Lake! The winner will be collectively selected by our panel of talented photographers we have on staff here at Trailfitters. NOTE: Photo must be taken during the Trail Challenge.
Camping Options – Looking to make a camping trip out of this hike? There are two Superior Hiking Trail campsites nearby. About a half mile past the Photo Spot at Wolf Lake are the East & West Kennedy Creek Campsites. See the SHT’s website for campsite rules & trail etiquette.
If you really want to put in some miles and knock out two Trail Challenge hikes on the same trip, check out this route: Wolf Lake to Section 13. This out-and-back overnight hike on the SHT is roughly 17 miles total and features plenty of elevation gain going up & down rocky ridges with plenty of amazing views. You can even extend the mileage if you want by adding in the spur trails to Fantasia Overlook, Sawmill Dome and Picnic Rock along the way. If you’re hiking with a group of people, you could also shorten this route down to around 10 miles total if you leave a car at the Wolf Lake trailhead on Highway 1, and another car at the Section 13 trailhead on Cty Rd 6.
NOTE: There is no water source at Section 13. Filter & carry all the water you’ll need from Sawmill Creek at the Lake County Road 6 Trailhead.
